A forerunner in industrial design
For decades, companies in the Lahti region have relied on design to improve their competitiveness. Design is in the genes – it is in the shared labor of product development professionals, designers and users of the product. Design brings new business, even better public services and pleasant living environments to the Lahti region – it brings jobs and quality of life.
In the Lahti region, there are several internationally known companies whose success is largely based on design. Isku, Kemppi, Luhta and Stala, for example, have for years used local industrial design expertise as well as the information and feedback provided by users in their product development.
The Institute of Design and Fine Arts of the Lahti University of Applied Sciences represents cutting edge in industrial design in Finland and is known outside the country’s borders as well. Hundreds of design professionals
There are nearly 200 small design businesses and self-employed professionals operating in the Lahti region covering all areas of design. One of the most known is the award-winning furniture and interior designer, Tapio Anttila.
Design Foundation Finland is located in Lahti, for a reason. It promotes and supports the scientific research, education and development of design, awards grants, maintains the design center and participates in the research and development of design.
CleanDesign – environmentally friendly industrial design
In the future, products should be environmentally friendly, easy to use and attractive. In the Lahti region, we can develop and produce that. The area has strong expertise in cleantech and industrial design. Combine these two and you get CleanDesign.

Inhabitants as designers
Lahen D is a product development panel consisting of inhabitants of the city of Lahti and is actively involved in the development of products, public services and the urban environment. They have taken part in the planning of the Lahti market square area, various events, multi-purpose buildings, drinking fountains and bicycle shelters as well as several product development projects run by the students of Lahti Institute of Design and Fine Arts, “Muotsikka”.
